Travel to Cardiff

In addition to the details below, you may wish to consult the advice on the Cardiff University website for further information.

Road Travel: directions are provided on the Cardiff University website for finding various Cardiff University buildings by road from any UK Postcode. Note, however, that Cardiff University cannot provide any parking for non-residential guests as we are near the city centre.

Air Travel: Cardiff International Airport is 11 miles from the city centre and is served by KLM / Northwest from Amsterdam. For further information see www.cwlfly.com/ There are shuttle buses from Cardiff Wales Airport to and from the city centre call Traveline on 0870 608 2 608 (National Call rate). Alternatively this information can be found on the airport website.

Taxis to the town centre cost about £25 and take about 1/2 hour. It is also possible to fly to London and take a train. Heathrow Airport is nearest London airport to Cardiff. The Rail-air link to Cardiff from Heathrow takes up to 3 hours, There are also buses to Cardiff from Heathrow, but these take longer, and are often fully booked in advance.

Rail, Bus Travel: People travelling by train or coach should travel to Cardiff Central Railway / Bus Station.
The London to Cardiff Intercity train service leaves London Paddington Station on the hour and on the half hour with a journey time of about 2 hours. For train information and time tables please ring +44 (0)845 0484950 or consult

National Express operates coaches with direct links from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. For coach information please contact +44 (0)8705 808080 or consult www.nationalexpress.com.

Cardiff University Accommodation and Breakfast Information

Accommodation will have been booked in advance by you. All rooms are single en-suite.

Your residence is Senghennydd Hall (No 46 on the map ). Please collect your key from the reception at Senghennydd Court (No 47 on the map ). Office hours are between 8.00am – 10.00pm. If you will be arriving outside these hours please contact us so alternative arrangements can be made.

For residential guests breakfast will be served in the Trevithick Refectory (No 58 on the site map) from 7.30-9.00am from Monday 25th to Saturday 30th June inclusive. For those staying outside of these dates a continental breakfast will be delivered to your kitchen and placed in the fridge on each morning of your stay.

Service/Maintenance Request Card In each kitchen – please make reception aware of any problems with your accommodation


On the day of departure rooms should be vacated by 10.00am unless alternative arrangements have been agreed with reception. Keys should be returned to Senghennydd Court Reception.


Parking Information for residential guests

Car parking permits will be issued from the accommodation reception. The permit must be displayed in the windscreen of your vehicle at all times during your stay.

Registration for the conference and all other enquiries will be dealt with at the Registration Desk which will be located in the Junior Common Room in the Trevithick Building. The Registration Desk will be staffed throughout the conference at the following times.:

8.30am to 5.00pm on Monday 25th June 2007

8.30am to 5.00pm on Tuesday 26th June 2007

8.30am to 5.00pm on Wednesday 27th June 2007

8.30am to 2.00pm on Thursday 28th June 2007

8.30 to 13.30 on Friday 29th June 2007

A copy of the programme, list of participants, badge and bag will be issued to all participants when registering.

Welcome Reception

A reception will be held on Sunday 24th June in the Junior Common Room in the Trevithick Building (No 58 on the map) from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.


Sessions

Conference sessions will be held in Faculty Lecture Theatre on the 1st floor of the Trevithick Building. The lecture theatre is equipped with Powerpoint and the usual overhead projection facilities. Please bring your presentation on a memory stick or disk and give them to Rhys Taylor either before the session starts or during the breaks so Rhys can load them on the system and check it all works in advance. Rhys will be available throughout the event should you have any problems.


Refreshments during the conference

Refreshments during the event will be served in the Junior Common Room in the Trevithick Building.

Please note that no lunches have been booked for you so you can are free to go to the Trevithick Restaurant or have a walk and a sandwich in the city centre.


We are not able to offer dinner on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th as we could not attain the number required by our catering department. Everyone who booked these should have received a refund and an email explaining this and letting you know that we have refunded you.


Informal optional get-together in Cardiff Bay on the evening of 26th June

This is not a plan but an option. Perhaps a number of you might like to meet up down the Bay and go for a meal in one of the many international restaurants, or, perhaps you would like to have a drink and a look around at the Wales Millenium Centre or the Senedd Building (The National Assembly for Wales Building). There will be a map on the IAU website which will show you how to walk from the city centre (approx 20 minute walk) or you can get on the train at Cardiff Queen Street to the Cardiff Bay Station (approx 5 minutes). Why not ask your conference colleagues if they would like to do this.


Conference Dinner - Wednesday evening 27th June
A five course dinner with wine will be held in the magnificent 14th century Great Hall of Caerphilly Castle. Come and explore the castle grounds and the famous leaning tower. Transport has been arranged to collect everyone from the outside the Trevithick Building at 7.00pm and we will return to Cardiff at 11.30pm. A cash bar will be available on the night.


Astronomical Walk – Thursday 28th June

We will go by coach to Llantwit Major and then walk along the stunning coastline to Nash Point Lighthouse. A buffet has been organised at the nearby Plough and Harrow Pub in the late afternoon. Transport has been arranged to collect those who have booked at 2.00pm. We will return to Cardiff at approx 8.30pm. A good chance to blow away any cobwebs.

Posters

The poster display will be in the Junior Common Room in the Trevithick Building. Please bring along your poster we will supply the Velcro.

Receipts

For those who have not received your receipts, please collect these from Registration.


Internet Access during the Conference

A wireless connection will be available in the lecture theatre for those with laptops - you will need to register (information on this and forms will be available at registration) to obtain a temporary user name

and password. There will also be terminals available to access the internet.


Banks and Shops near the conference venue

Banks: The nearest banks are situated in Queen Street which is just a short walk from the conference venue.


Cardiff City Centre: where you will find all the usual shops and banks, is a 5 minute walk from the Conference Venue


Medical Facilities

The University Health Centre is situated at 47 Park Place and is open from 9.00am - 4.30pm Monday - Friday. Please note that the Health Centre is to be used in an emergency only. The Health Centre Telephone Number is +44 (0)29 2087 4819. Information on local doctors and dental surgeries can be obtained from the Health Centre.
