UCAS visitors have rare glimpse of activity on the Sun

UCAS visitors to Cardiff University School of Physics and Astronomy were treated to an unusual sight of an extra-large solar prominence through the observatory's solar telescope, despite the sun having until very recently shown little or no activity.

Making ordered gold strings with coated nanoparticles

Researchers have managed to get Gold nanoparticles to associate into highly-ordered structures when coated with ligands formed from mesogens, the rigid part of a liquid-crystal molecule.
