Theoretical investigations on suspended particle(s) in polymer and liquid crystal matrix

This talk will mainly focus on how to get the effective depletion potential between two nanoparticles suspended in a polymer matrix via computer simulation. Some other interesting phenomena such as inverse-temperature crystalization for such a hard-soft mixture are also investigated. A Freedericksz-like positional transition triggered by an applied external field is discovered for a particle suspended in a liquid crystal cell. The conditions for such a transition to occur is also discussed with a consideration of molecular dielectric anisotropy, anchoring direction, and field direction.
