PER colloquium

Science communication and education as social injustice

Speaker: Emily Dawson (UCL)
Date: Wednesday 4 November 2020
Time: 14:00
Venue: Zoom

To have said in a previous year that social justice in science communication was a matter of life and death would have had me accused of exaggeration, but this year it seems to me the inescapable conclusion of the world we are living in. What does it mean in our societies to be outside the imagined body of the public or citizenry in terms of racism, sexism, class discrimination, ablism, homophobia, ageism and their intersections. That is, what does it mean to experience exclusion, whether implicitly or explicitly? I will argue that meaningfully inclusive science communication and education practices are painfully thin on the ground and that change is urgently needed not only on the basis of social justice, but to meet the critical needs that 2020 has presented us with.
