Is star formation universal? Do all stars everywhere and everywhen form in basically the same way, or does star formation vary with environment? I'll talk about some interesting and confusing observations that suggest that present day local star formation is fundamentally different from the way most field stars form... I've been pondering these observations for 20 years and I'm still no wiser about what exactly they are telling us...
