Physics Chat

Micro-devices for high temperature physics

Speaker: Jaspa Stritt (OW)
Date: Friday 23 October 2020
Time: 15:00
Venue: Zoom

Only 3 elemental metals (Tungsten, Rhenium and Tantalum) have melting points greater than 3300K. By utilising ultra-high temperature ceramics and micro-fabrication processes we aim to develop devices capable of reaching temperatures in excess of 4000K. Operating at these temperatures will result in highly tuneable broadband emitters centred in the near-IR with intensities several orders of magnitude higher than what has been achieved previously. This talk will give an overview of the work currently we are currently conducting on ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTC's) and their applications as blackbody emitters and micro-devices.
