Instruments & Collaborations

Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope (BLAST) is a stratospheric balloon-borne 2m telescope which observes the sky with bolometric detectors operating in three, 30% wide, bands at 250µm, 350µm, and 500µm.

BETTII is a Far-IR spatial/spectral interferometer on a balloon. Led by NASA/Goddard, Cardiff is working in collaboration on provision of optical components (filters and beamsplitters), optical design validation, and observation and data processing techniques.

The Neel IRAM kinetic inductance array (NIKA) is a collaboration between several European partners to build the next generation, large format millimeter camera for the IRAM 30m telescope.

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) is a candidate ESA medium class mission to be the first dedicated space mission to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres, addressing the suitability of those planets for life and placing our Solar System in context.

Low NEP TES Bolometers for Space Applications

An ESA-funded programme to advance Transition Edge Superconducting (TES) detector technology to a level where it can be considered as mature and offer a credible detector for future FIR astronomy missions.
