Nanoscale Science & Technology

Examples of nanocrystalline diamond films: two upright circular disks mounted on a base, one appearing blue in colour and the other with a yellow/gold colouration.

Examples of nanocrystalline diamond films grown on silicon. The colour comes from interference between the reflected light from the silicon wafer and NCD film. The blue wafer is 70 nm thick and the gold 140 nm. See Williams et al, DRM 20 (2011) 621

The study of phenomena at the nanoscale has lead to new technologies and applications that have profound implications on our everyday lives. This theme deals with fundamental science, applications and technology at the nano-length scale. Thus, it overlaps, supports and expands on several of the parent themes.
