Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) are powerful spectroscopy tools, used e.g. for chemical structure analysis. However due to the technique’s low sensitivity the detection of single molecules is not possible. This limitation can be overcome by employing quantum sensors in diamond. These are optically addressable single electron spins in diamond with unique properties. In this talk I will give an introduction to the quantum sensors and show how they can be used for the detection of nuclear and electron spins on the nanoscale. Moreover I will give an overview of what has been achieved so far with this emerging technique and what the challenges ahead are.
