Astro Seminar

The Formation of the First Quasars in the Universe

Speaker: Daniel Whalen (Portsmouth)
Date: Wednesday 10 November 2021
Time: 14:00
Venue: Zoom

Although supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are found in the centers of most massive galaxies today, over 200 quasars powered by SMBHs have now been discovered at z > 6, with nine at z > 7. How billion-solar mass BHs formed by such early times has posed challenges to current paradigms of cosmological structure formation. I will discuss possible pathways for their origin and evolution as well as prospects for their detection by JWST, Euclid, RST, and SKA.
