I will outline recent work that indicates that neutral atoms and even molecules can survive in a neutral and potentially massive gas phase within ~(500-10^3) Schwarszchild radii around Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Besides its impact on AGN research, this could allow a fundamentally new type of General Relativity tests in strongly curved Spacetime.
