Integrated photonics is a key technology with wide and diverse applications, both classical and quantum. Examples of applications of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are quantum key distribution chips and quantum random number generators, and on-chip biosensing. The ability to make PICs from new materials will enable future devices to have improved functionality and efficiency. Gallium nitride (GaN) is a successful material used in solid-state lighting and high-power electronics but is currently not used for integrated photonics. We believe this to be an opportunity, and GaN PICs as an area ripe for research and development. One of the challenges of GaN integrated photonics is the lack of availability of high quality GaN on a sacrificial substrate from which to make devices. This is related to the fact that GaN is typically grown on sapphire substrates, which, although providing the refractive index contrast needed for optical confinement, also introduces strain and dislocations at the epitaxial interface from lattice mismatch. We have circumvented this problem by using an angled etching technique to make devices from the upper region of the semiconductor material. In this talk, I will present simulations of GaN triangular nanobeam devices, and discuss the properties of the optical modes supported by these devices. I will also discuss how to characterise simple integrated optical devices.
