Coexistence monitoring in LEEM: Experiment and image analysis

Speaker: Matyo Ivanov (JPViterbo)
Date: Friday 4 February 2022
Time: 15:00
Venue: Zoom

We monitor the coexistence between the (6x6) and c(8x2) phases in GaAs(100). This coexistence is characterized by the sharp boundaries between the two phases, which exhibit small fluctuations that give away the boundary stiffness. With that, we are able to access a fundamental parameter of the surface - the entropy difference between the two phases, without the need to use other costly and complex experimental techniques. In this talk, we will quickly go through the physics of the problem and focus on the data analysis - going from raw real-space sequence of images to explicit data of how boundary lines fluctuate. We will go through the Computer Vision methods that allow the boundary detection and analysis in blurry and noisy images with subpixel precision.
