Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are an essential component of optical communications systems. Traditionally, these devices are made using a regrowth process where epitaxial growth is interrupted to define and etch the grating near the active region of the laser structure. This introduces defects into the material as well as being time consuming and costly. Moreover, regrowth is also not suitable for use in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) where multiple components are placed on a single chip. This work aims to develop novel device architectures and fabrication processes for single growth DFB lasers with a focus on scalability and suitability for use in PICs. This talk will cover background theory on DFB lasers as well as some of the recent work that has been undertaken in this project including the development of a fabrication process for 11th order DFB lasers on quantum well and quantum dot material.
